Soil to Skin, a collaboration with Goucher College Art Galleries and Pellis /\ Terra, unveils a powerful synthesis of art, science, and community dialogue to address the legacies of land use, pollution, climate change, and environmental justice. Through interactive sculptures, archival photography, paintings, and collaborative public programming, the exhibition seeks to deepen our understanding of environmental issues while inspiring cultural shifts toward a sustainable future.

Stephanie Mercedes’ I hold you close unfolds as a haunting exploration of queer identity, resilience, and the embodied experience of vulnerability in a society that often views difference with suspicion, if not hostility. Constructed from melted weapons reformed into steel forms, these works are lit with stark floodlights and animated by sound and motorized elements, immersing viewers in a charged atmosphere that mirrors the intensity of queer existence within a violent world.

Featuring works by Unobskey Visiting Artist Derrick Adams and, from the Last Resort Artist Retreat, Jabari Jefferson, Murjoni Merriweather, Jamaal Peterman, McKinley Wallace II, and Kyle Yearwood.
Derrick Adams is a Baltimore-born, Brooklyn-based artist whose critically admired work spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, video, and sound installations. His multidisciplinary practice engages how individuals’ ideals, aspirations, and personae become attached to specific objects, colors, textures, symbols, and ideologies. His work probes the influence of popular culture on the formation of self-image, and the relationship between man and monument as they coexist and embody one another.

We Care: Works by Corita Kent

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 22, 6 – 8p.m.
Corita Kent was an artist, an educator, and an activist for social justice and the anti-war movement. A member of the religious order Mary of the Immaculate Heart, Corita used her faith, her distinct design sensibility, and aesthetic influences from packaging to pop art to create her unique prints that inspire attention to and action against the critical issues of her time. The selection of boldly colored text-based serigraphs are on loan from U.S. Province of the Society of St. Sulpice. We Care is presented along with the Special Collections & Archives’ exhibition of the same title, which documents the Goucher community’s participation in activism and protests throughout the college’s history.
Form and Gesture: Impressions of Movement

Form and Gesture: Impressions of Movement couples the vocabularies of movement analysis with the formal analysis of visual arts. The pieces included are artifacts of their own production, documents that describe their own making. The aesthetics and forms are a direct result of physically rigorous or improvisatory studio processes performed by the artists. The show is an invitation to imagine and discuss how the artists’ movement contributes to their techniques. It also informs a deeper appreciation for and expression of their art practices across geographies, generations, and cultural identities.
Sweaty Eyeballs Animation – Behind the Screens
Exhibit Dates: February 11 to March 27, 2022
Behind the Screens presents animation highlights from the Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival, exhibited alongside additional artworks and process ephemera that provide a window into each of the artists’ unique approach to the medium. The animations range from documentary and narrative to the visually abstract. They span digital and analog, with examples of stop motion, rotoscoping, hand-painted, hand-drawn, clay, collage, puppetry, and zoetrope animation.

Rediscovering Goucher’s Lost Museum
Exhibit Dates: September 23 to December 15, 2021
Rediscovering Goucher’s Lost Museum reconstitutes the remnants of the former Museum of the Woman’s College of Baltimore, a universal collection of Natural History, Art, and Ethnography assembled in the late-19th century. The show, supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, explores the history and legacy of Goucher’s historic Museum and the power of exhibition as an agent of storytelling. A collaboration among faculty, staff, and students, the exhibition considers the shifting practices and ethics of collecting, and diverse narrative strategies for telling the complicated history of objects. Goucher’s Lost Museum features storied artifacts and specimens; facsimiles; fictions; speculations; and the artistic contribution of contemporary artists whose work addresses ethical and archival gaps in museum and field research practices.
Including work by Jackie Milad, Kaitlin Murphy and Katie Wolfe & a print by Mark Dion produced with Goucher Students during his Unobskey Visiting Artist residency.
Ajay Kurian: Polyphemus
Exhibit Dates: September 18 to November 30, 2020
Polyphemus, installed to resemble a clandestine beer hall meeting, depicts cycloptic figures that possess power and status, populating a table in an ambiguous, social grouping. Atop easy postures and snappy outfits, their heads are each made up of a watchful, rotating eye and an illuminated smile. Above, a disembodied set of mechanized eyes monitors the scene, part security camera, part dystopian nightmare. Within this space all are observed, and all are observing. There is a symbiotic relationship between the platform and participants in which those who have gotten through the gates become gatekeepers—this club polices itself.
Incidental Monuments: Designing With Discards
Exhibit Dates: February 1 to March 14, 2020
Incidental Monuments highlights artists and art practices that consciously repurpose everyday, overproduced materials. Beginning from a student data-visualization project on the volume of non-recyclable plastic utensils discarded on campus each semester, the exhibition recognizes the formal and individual efforts of artists working within a similar set of concerns. Using the student installation as a thesis, the exhibition brings together artworks that question the way we regularly use, dispose of, and often forget about certain materials.
Permutations
Exhibit Dates: October 15 to December 14, 2019
A space of recognition, Permutations presents art collectors Lisa Gregory’s and Darryl Atwell’s exploration of the contemporary African American expression and identity. A combination of carefully selected pieces highlights the spiritual and historical interconnectedness of locally grown artists, Black owned galleries, and artists from the diaspora.
A Periodic Table
Exhibit Dates: September 3 to October 13, 2019
Silber Gallery is pleased to present A Periodic Table, an exhibition that pairs the work of Conor Backman and Taylor Baldwin. A painter and a sculptor, respectively, Backman and Baldwin both use their work to explore questions of value, tropes, and traditional methods within their medium, and ultimately the academic role of the artist. At once representational and conceptual, neither artist’s work is exactly as it seems. The whole is both a singular form and a display of its components that in turn supply a deeper narrative.
Foliaform
Exhibit Dates: April 9 to June 10, 2019
Silber will host Foliaform, a group exhibition that explores humans’ relationship with plants. The work approaches the subject from multiple perspectives, presenting this exchange as exploitative, curated, synthetic, immersive, or an attempt to tame or manicure something innately wild. Featured artists include Ariel C. Foster ’15, Erick Antonio Benitez, Marissa Fein, James Williams, Adrienne Elise Tarver, and Lisa Dillin.
The Acephalous Series
Exhibit Dates: January 29 through March 16, 2019
Laylah Ali's The Acephalous Series presents calculated, precise depictions of inconclusive scenes and asks the viewer to interpret them. Rather than revealing the “correct answer," her work provokes individual inquiry and discovery. It is a series to be studied and experienced, not merely seen.
Piece Work
Exhibit Dates: Monday, November 5 through Friday, December 21, 2018
Piece Work is a group exhibition featuring five artists who assemble significant paintings, sculptures and installations from a cumulation of smaller parts. Cordy Ryman (NY) presents meticulously stacked wall sculptures made up of smaller, painted, wood blocks, often cannibalized from past site-specific installations. Dominic Terlizzi’s (Baltimore) elaborate paintings reveal a multitude of cast objects and sculptural practices at work in the surface of his images. Rachel Hayes (MO) is well-known for her gossamer fabric pieces that function as painting, sculpture and transformative installation.
+1 FACULTY EXHIBITION

+1 is an exhibition of recent work by Goucher College’s art faculty, presented alongside an invited artist of their choice. Many faculty members have artist spouses, and/or work collaboratively on large-scale pieces with neighbors, studiomates or peers.
When Living is a Protest

When Living is a Protest will feature news images by photographer, humanist, and activist Radcliffe (Ruddy) Roye ’98. In this ongoing body of work, Roye approaches protest with sophistication and emotional intelligence. A contributor for National Geographic, TIME, and The New York Times, his work has also appeared in The New Yorker, Vogue, Ebony, Fast Company, BET, and ESPN. He was named TIME Instagram photographer of 2016.
Jim Condron: DIminishing Returns
Exhibit Dates: Tuesday, January 30 through Sunday, March 16, 2018
Diminishing Returns features over 20 paintings and 10 sculptural works by the contemporary artist Jim Condron. Through the paintings in this exhibition, Condron presents a haptic convergence of scale, size, color, texture, and dimensionality. The sculptural works in the show reference farming practices and consider the framework by which the economic concept of the law of diminishing returns was founded and explained.
Rachel Rotenberg: Sanity

Rachel Rotenberg’s large-scale wood sculptures transform gallery spaces into amorphous worlds populated by sensually curving surfaces, intriguingly formed negative spaces, and forceful volumes. Implying movement, these suggestive forms make visible the symbiotic relationship between the intellect and the physical—each one echoing the other.
Steven Dobbin: I Repeat Myself

I Repeat Myself celebrates the repetition of daily life, Steven Dobbin’s teaching, and his art. As a special education teacher for over 30 years, Steven Dobbin has established repetition and symbols as a way of survival for his students. This philosophy, that repetition is the “mother of all learning,” has informed Dobbin’s aesthetic. Use of the same subject in various mediums—the grids of wood transfers, the glass jars and tins containing symbols, and finally the blinking neon sign—all become a reflection of our memory, and his need for order and predictability.
Goucher Collects: Schools of Thought

Dre Britton: Structural Integrity

Dre Britton: Structural Integrity is comprised of found furniture and fractured objects culled from the city streets of Baltimore. The level of decay evident in each object dictates the extent to which Britton formally intervenes in developing his sculptures, paintings, and hybridized three-dimensional works of art.

Over the past two years, Cox has orchestrated and captured intimate moments between lesbian lovers through photography. In Paper Shapers, Jaime Bennati, Joe Cypressi, Elizabeth Dove, Scott Hazard, Jason Hughes, Leslie Shellow, and Renee van der Stelt, highlight the many ways paper can be manipulated. Whether by folding, cutting, rolling, piercing, layering, weaving, or molding, these seven artists use paper as their primary artistic medium, but show us much more than sheets, pieces, or scraps.

In Temporal Topographies, Becky Alprin, Amanda Burnham, Samantha Gainsburg, Alexander Groshong, Hannah Naomi Kim, Evan La Londe, Cathy Last-Mann, Elena Volkova, and Adam Weir explore the space where time intersects with created and natural environments.

Spectra is an exhibition of work by Goucher College's art faculty. Participating faculty include: Stuart Abarbanel, Laura Burns, Rick Delaney, Laurie Fader, Breon Gilleran, Allyn Massey, Matthew McConville, Cornel Rubino, Pamela Thompson, and Ed Worteck.
Adornamental
Exhibit Dates:February 16th through March 28th, 2010.
Adornamental features the work of seven artists who are breaking new ground in the decorative and ornamental arts. At times considered primarily feminine and removed from fine art, the decorative arts began to achieve an elevated status in 1975, with the creation of the Pattern and Decoration Movement.
Ambiguous Bodies
Exhibit Dates: November 3rd through December 13th, 2009.
The human body can be interpreted in multiple and diverse ways. In the exhibition Ambiguous Bodies, the artists employ the idea of ambiguity, dismantling notions of the classical and ideal form, while simultaneously broadening the scope of the human form to include differences of beauty, race, sexuality, and gender.
